Plomo presents “Genius Loci” an individual exhibition by Carlos Santos.

Genius Loci is a concept of Roman antiquity that indicates the singular character of a site. The Aura, the genius that configures the space by giving it identity. Thus, the Genius Loci appears the immediate context of Carlos Santos (the neighborhood, the streets, the concrete badly put, the dust, etc) and responds at the same time to that and as of its practice as an artist.

On this relation with the place Carlos Santos extracts the elements with which it works: waterproofing of its roof, marble that serves to seal cracks in the streets, ropes of the clotheslines and transforms them by breaking their own rules of use. Concept and context are interweave complemented, reminding that the context is not a fact, but always the result of an interpretation.

Carlos Santos (n. 1983) lives between Mexico and Chicago. His work has been exhibited in prominent institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, the Biennale of Portugal, Zhou B Art Center Chicago, Yamakiwa Gallery in Japan among others.

Genius Loci es un concepto de la antigüedad romana que indica el carácter singular de un sitio. El aura, el genio que configura el espacio otorgándole identidad. Así, el Genius Loci figura el contexto inmediato de Carlos Santos (el barrio, las calles, el concreto mal puesto, el polvo, etc) y responde al mismo tiempo el que y como de su práctica como artista.

Sobre esta relación con el lugar Carlos Santos extrae los elementos con los cuales trabaja: impermeabilizantes de su azotea, mármol que sirve para sellar grietas en las calles, mecates de los tendederos y los transforma rompiendo sus propias reglas de uso. Concepto y contexto se entretejen complementándose, recordándonos que el contexto no es un hecho, sino siempre el resultado de una interpretación.

Carlos Santos (n. 1983) vive entre México y Chicago. Su obra ha sido expuesta en destacadas instituciones como, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de los Ángeles, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de San Diego, la bienal de Portugal, Zhou B Art Center de Chicago, Yamakiwa Gallery en Japón entre otros.

Plomo Gallery presents the exhibition “Genius Loci”, where the artist descontextualized elements of his daily space, bringing out its expressive capacities and proposing a reading of these a from their volumes and textures. With this, it not only explores the relationship between the object t and its meaning, but offers a reinterpretation of the space and the practices that are structured around and in it. The video clips “respond at the same time what and how of your practice as an artist”.

Plomo Gallery presenta la exposición “Genius Loci”, donde el artista descontextualiza elementos de su espacio cotidiano, sacando a relucir sus capacidades expresivas y proponiendo una lectura de estos a partir de sus volúmenes y texturas. Con esto, no sólo explora la relación entre el objeto y su significado, sino que ofrece una reinterpretación del espacio y de las prácticas que se estructuran alrededor y en él. La muestra “responde al mismo tiempo el qué y el cómo de su práctica como artista”.
